A *very* traditional SW Ontario Tory "heartland" riding, although it did your typical Lib-NDP two-step in 1987-95. While not (yet?) nominated as I write, Ernie Hardeman, a feed mill operator and former township mayor and Oxford County warden, fits this territory like a glove. And if that wasn't enough, Oxford was the closest Jean Charest came to gaining a second PC seat in Ontario in '97.

Oxford is a typical small town/rural area, with the demographics largely composed of farmers and small business people, it does not leave a lot of room for organized labour. Although a local High School teacher has been nominated as liberal candidate, the liberals will win support from the teacher union, but having such a large influence, I feel will dienfranchize a lot of people in the liberal party and will switch to the PC's. It may be close, but Oxford will definitely go PC.

For Whom the Bellweather Tolls by John Ibbitson
The former bellwether of Oxford can now be counted safe and secure for Ernie Hardeman, a seed merchant who took the riding in 1995 and, apparently, can have it for as long as he wants.
